FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I need a Pre-Purchase Marine Survey?

A boat or yacht purchase often represents an owner’s second largest investment after a home purchase. Just as a home inspection by a trained professional can reveal hidden problems—wet basements to leaky roofs, a stem to stern marine survey can provide a buyer informed confidence in the buying process. A detailed report by Miller Marine Consulting could reveal critical issues that might be missed by a potential buyer when reviewing website listings, sales photos or during a walkthrough.

How much does a Marine Survey cost?

Dependent on the type of survey: pre-purchase, insurance, appraisal or damage and repair survey the costs can vary. However, usually the cost is determined by the foot—or the length of the craft. Survey cost quotes are quickly available. Just drop an email or call.

What types of crafts do you survey?

From small boats to luxury super yachts and everything in between: cruisers, trawlers, sailboats, catamarans, pontoon boats, and more. Give us a call or email if you have questions.

What will my survey report contain?

Dependent on the type of survey, the report may contain out of water bottom inspection, cosmetic and structural inspection-both exterior and interior, testing results of all onboard systems, a sea trial, a fair-market determination of the vessel’s value and more.

How long after surveying the vessel can I expect a report?

Three to five days is an average turnaround, but if travel is involved, the time could vary. Expedited services are also available.

The boat I’m interested in purchasing is out of state. Can you travel to it?

Yes, I’m happy to travel where necessary. I can perhaps even save you a trip, if you’d like to send me in advance of your traveling to see a prospective buy. I can at least narrow down your list of options.
